Stone-Coated Steel Profiles in Tallahassee
Every stone-coated panel starts the same way. One product's ICC-ES evaluation report describes Galvalume steel (AZ50 coating) only 0.017 inch thick, with an acrylic base coat, embedded stone granules and a clear acrylic glaze over the top. What changes from product to product is the shape pressed into it, and the shape sets the minimum slope.

Barrel and Spanish Tile Profiles
Tile profiles copy clay barrel tile with rounded crowns. They suit hip roofs and houses where clay or concrete tile would be too heavy for the framing. In one manufacturer's estimating sheet, a tile panel covers a 14-1/2 inch course and takes 20 panels per square.
- Minimum slope: 3 in 12 (evaluation report and maker's sheet)
- Install method: at least one barrel profile goes straight onto the deck, no battens

Stone-Coated Shake Profiles
Shake panels have a ragged, split-wood bottom edge, and the granules dull the shine so it reads as weathered cedar from the street. On a farmhouse or cottage, the shake pattern fits the house better than tile does.
- Course and count: 12-5/8 inch exposure, 22.4 panels per square (one maker's sheet)
- Minimum slope: 3 in 12
Stone-Coated Shingle Profiles
Shingle profiles are flatter, with raised and lowered tabs that look like a dimensional asphalt shingle. Slopes differ by product: one evaluated shingle panel needs at least 4 in 12, another 3 in 12. Between 2 in 12 and those minimums, the report treats the panels as decorative only, laid over a separate code-compliant roof. That catches a lot of low back porches.
Batten vs Direct-to-Deck Installs
Some profiles screw straight to the plywood. Others ride on 1x4 wood battens fastened through to framing no more than 24 inches apart. Battens leave an air gap under the steel and give a flat base on a wavy deck. The manufacturer also notes that battens can simplify a roof-over. In Florida, though, a recover still has to pass the code's conditions first. See metal roof over shingles. Ask which method the quote uses and why.
Granule Wear and Touch-Up
The stone face hides scratches, but it isn't permanent paint. Where a panel is cut around a pipe or vent, one manufacturer's guide has the installer cover the sealant with loose stones from a touch-up kit. On a roof that gets walked on for gutter or HVAC work, ask how foot traffic should be handled before anyone climbs up.

Stone-Coated Steel Quotes: What to Compare
The panels are only part of a stone-coated quote. Most of the spread comes from:
Profile
Tile, shake or shingle, and each one's panels per square.Battens or deck
Battens add lumber and labor but can fix an uneven deck.Trim pieces
Hip and ridge caps, end caps, valley metal and wall flashing are sold separately and priced by the foot.Roof shape
HomeGuide's material table puts stone-coated steel at $350 to $600 per square for the panels alone. The gap up to the installed price is mostly labor on cuts, hips and valleys.Paperwork
Stone-coated panels go on the permit with their own Florida Product Approval number, like any covering. See metal roof installation.
Stone-Coated Steel Under Tallahassee Trees and Storms
Here the pull toward stone-coated steel is the look of tile without the weight. One evaluated product weighs 1.3 lb per square foot installed. A panel maker's bulletin puts asphalt shingles at 2.5 to 3.4 lb. That gap matters on an older brick ranch framed for shingles, where the owner wants a tile look without adding load to the rafters.
Pine straw doesn't slide off a tile profile as easily as off smooth panels, so valleys on a stone-coated roof under longleaf or loblolly pines need clearing more often.
If impact rating matters for your insurer, check the product's UL 2218 class rather than assuming every stone-coated panel carries Class 4.
