Church Metal Roof Types by Building
A church campus is several buildings with different roofs and different code categories. Pricing and planning them one at a time keeps the scope clear.

Sanctuary Roofs
The sanctuary carries the tallest, steepest roof on the site, and often the largest. Standing seam suits it: long panels run eave to ridge with no exposed screws, which matters on a slope nobody wants to climb for maintenance. The Florida code assigns buildings whose main use is public assembly with an occupant load over 300 to Risk Category III, which uses a separate, higher wind-speed map than ordinary buildings. For the wind design and uplift ratings, see metal roof installation.
- Access: OSHA requires guardrails, nets or personal fall arrest for roofers on a steep roof with edges 6 feet or more above the ground
- Worth settling first: where the lift or scaffold will stand, and how lawns and walkways get protected

Steeples and Bell Towers
Steeples and towers are small surfaces with a lot of edges, so most of the work is flashing. Copper is the traditional metal. For sheet work the code wants at least 16-ounce copper, held down with copper, brass, bronze or stainless steel fasteners. Painted steel or aluminum standing seam costs less and comes in colors that match the main roof. See copper roofing.
Fellowship Halls and Education Wings
Fellowship halls and classroom wings are often lower and flatter than the sanctuary. The code lets standing seam run down to a 1/4:12 pitch, low enough for most of these wings without switching to a membrane. If a wing houses a school (Group E occupancy) with an occupant load over 250, the code also places it in Risk Category III. Where the wing meets the taller sanctuary wall, ask for a wall flashing detail in the scope.
Parsonages and Ministry Homes
A parsonage or ministry house falls under the residential code, the same as any house in town. It's usually the easiest roof on the campus to schedule and a common first phase. See metal roof replacement for tear-off, deck repair and permits.

Planning a Church Metal Re-Roof in Tallahassee
A building committee has to fit the work around a budget and a calendar of services. These steps help.
Price each building
One line per building lets the committee phase the work by priority and budget.Phase against the 25% rule
Repairing or replacing more than 25% of a roof section in 12 months can trigger bringing the whole section to code. See metal roof repair.Schedule around services
Ask that noisy tear-off stay off worship days and that the crew keep entrances clear.Gutters and drainage
A sanctuary roof sheds a lot of water onto walkways and entrances. Decide early whether gutters and downspouts are part of this contract.Notice of commencement
A sanctuary re-roof is well over the dollar threshold for one; the filing rule is on the metal roof replacement page.Written scope
Panel type, gauge, color, Florida Product Approval number, flashing details and who pulls the permit.
A committee contact can call or send the form with the address and buildings involved. The request is passed to the roofer we refer church work to, and the committee can ask for the scope and pricing in writing for its next meeting.
