Metal Shingle Styles for Tallahassee Houses
A metal shingle roof is sold by the look first and the metal second. The pattern you pick sets the price per square, the slope it can go on and how the valleys get flashed.

Slate-Look Steel Shingles
Slate-look shingles are galvanized or Galvalume steel pressed with a split-stone texture and painted a slate gray, blue, green or red. One manufacturer's line, for example, uses G-90 steel with a PVDF finish and a four-way lock. That product carries an ASTM D3161 Class F wind rating and a UL 2218 Class 4 impact rating, and other products will differ.
- Installed cost (metal slate): $600 to $1,400 per 100 sq ft (HomeGuide)
- Lowest pitch: 3 in 12, the code minimum for any metal shingle

Shake and Wood-Look Shingles
Shake profiles have deeper, uneven butts that throw shadow lines like split cedar. They read best on cottages, farmhouses and steep gables. Angi prices metal shake at an average of $24,000 for a whole roof, and most jobs fall between $11,000 and $42,000.
- Aluminum shake: $400 to $1,100 per square (Angi)
- Steel shake: $600 to $1,600 per square (Angi)
Dimensional Asphalt-Look Metal Shingles
If you want a metal roof that looks like an ordinary architectural shingle from the street, the closest match is usually a stone-coated steel shingle profile, where crushed stone on the face hides the metal. Those panels have their own install rules and pricing. See stone-coated steel roofing.
Interlocking Panels vs Individual Shingles
Some products are single shingles. Others are wider panels with several "shingles" stamped into one sheet. One aluminum panel, for example, comes in 36 or 60 inch lengths with 16-3/8 inches of coverage, concealed fasteners and a recommended minimum slope of 4 in 12. Bigger panels cover the roof faster. Small pieces turn a hip or dormer more neatly. Fixr notes that metal shingles take more labor to install than sheet panels, so expect the labor line to be a large share of the quote.

What Moves a Metal Shingle Quote
Two metal shingle quotes for the same house can be far apart. Put them side by side and compare:
Metal and coating
Steel, aluminum or copper. The code's minimum for press-formed aluminum shingles is 0.019 inch, and for copper shingles 12 ounces per square foot.Profile
Slate, shake or tile pattern, and single shingles or multi-shingle panels.Pitch
HomeGuide notes that roofs steeper than 6 in 12 need more labor, equipment and safety gear.Cut-up roofs
Hips, valleys, dormers and chimneys use more trim and waste. HomeGuide puts typical waste at 10% to 15% of material on complex roofs.Tear-off
HomeGuide prices removal of the old roof at $1 to $3 a square foot.Wind and approval paperwork
The permit asks for the shingle's Florida Product Approval number. See metal roof installation.
Metal Shingles on Tallahassee Roofs: Valleys, Pine Straw and Recovers
More than half of Tallahassee's land (55%) sits under tree canopy, mostly oak and pine. On a shingle-pattern roof, the valleys are where needles and leaves pile up and hold water. The Florida Building Code is specific about valley flashing under metal shingles. It has to be the same metal as the shingles (or another listed metal) and run at least 8 inches each side of the centerline. It also needs a splash diverter rib at least 3/4 inch high, and each piece has to lap the next by at least 4 inches. Ask to see that detail on the quote. On a house under big pines, it matters more than the color.
Recovering is the other local question. Some steel shingle makers say their product can go over up to two layers of asphalt shingles. Florida's code is stricter and stops a recover at one existing layer. The manufacturer's sheet doesn't override the permit office. See metal roof over shingles for the full list of conditions.
On slopes between 3 and 4 in 12, at least one maker requires its underlayment over the entire deck rather than only at the eaves and valleys. Low-pitch back additions on older ranch houses often land in that band, so check the pitch before choosing a shingle-pattern product for them.
See standing seam metal roofs for gauge and paint-system basics that apply to steel shingles too.
